Making ABC Crayons - HELP!

I read about this awesome idea on Chasing Cheerios. I was so excited I paid full price (I rarely do that) for the ABC mold and got to work.
The first time I tried to get them out of the mold, many of them broke. I chalked it up to being a first timer. The second and third tries were equally as heartbreaking.

Sooooo HELP! Any ideas for how to make this work for me? (I’ve thought about spraying the mold with cooking spray but haven’t tried it yet.) I love the crayons that turned out and I have big plans for all of the things I can make with these (gifts, birthday party favors, tags for the top of Christmas gifts, etc.) and need HELP!

  2. I haven't used the ABC molds, but have used other molds to do these and have had the same thing happen - they break all over the place. I haven't tried it again yet, but when I do here's what I plan to do differently - first, definitely spray them with non-stick spray; second, make sure there are enough crayons in them that when melted they reach the top of the mold (I'm thinking thicker means less breakage); third, I think freezing is a great idea too - stick 'em in the freezer for 15 minutes before you pop them out. Hopefully that will help! Also, I wonder if melting them in something else and then pouring them into the mold would make a difference - ? I know Allie at No Time for Flash Cards usually melts them in muffin papers then pours them into the mold. Good luck! Post again when you make your next attempt, I'd love to see how they turn out!!

  3. Oh, Carrie, you're brilliant! Yes, with all the wax in the crayons, freezing them will make them pop right out. Ever do that with a melted down candle stuck in the holder? That's an old trick and it really works.

  4. ALRIGHT! I'm excited. I hope it will work. I wasn't filling up the mold and I'm going to freeze them for sure! Thanks for the great advice!

  5. I always wondered how they got those crayons out so nicely! I have a plastic mold of star ice cubes and found removing the ice nearly impossible so I was skeptical on how the letters came out so perfectly. Will be interesting to know if freezing them will help.

  7. I've always made my molded crayons in the winter so I just stick them in the snow to cool off and they pop right out of the mold -- I love the freezer idea too!!
Are you using little pieces of crayons or big chunks? I'm asking because I always chop up my crayons into pretty little pieces (a centimeter or two long) and I think that helps them melt and mix more evenly!!

  9. Did it work? This is from 2009, so I assume you figured it out. I'm googling to see if I should use non-stick spray for my lego man crayons (silicon mold in the mail), toddler turning 2 in a month, lego party in the planning stages. If the molds are silicon also try pulling the pan away from the edges of the letter before trying to pop it out.

If you have any tricks for success please update.
    Thanks!
