Home Depot Materials

If your on your way to Home Depot or Lowes, here are a few materials you can pick up for your child that make great activities. PVC Pipe - In my 4th grade classroom I used these for students who preferred or needed to read out loud. They hold the pvc pipe like a phone and it magnifies their voice so much that they really only need to whisper to hear themselves read. For B, it works great as a pretend phone and for some reason he thinks he needs to yell while he is on the real phone so I'm hoping that by practicing with this that it might help solve the problem.

Mickey Mouse Paint Chips - These Mickey Mouse paint chips are perfect for a memory game or a matching game. I got 2 each of the primary colors and we started learning the concept of Memory with just 6 of them.

4 Shades of Color Paint Chips - The paint chips that have 4 shades of a color from lightest to darkest are great for a color matching game. You will need two of each. I glued and laminated one of each to a file folder and used velcro to match each color. This was too overwhelming for B so I ended up cutting each color strip out so they were individual color strip puzzles.
I like this Clothes Pin- Paint Chip Matching game better! One set of colors are glued to clothes pins and the child clips the clothes pin on the matching color (that way you can sneak in some extra motor skills practice too!).

Paint Sticks (Not Pictured) - I recently grabbed a handful of the sticks you mix your paint with. B was playing with them and started making letters. Why not give your child 4 or 5 of these sticks and challenge them to see how many letters they can make!

UPDATE: I just saw this Paint Chip Word Families activity on Pink and Green Mama that I want to remember to try later on down the road!

  1. I love finding creative uses for ordinary things- especially if they are free. I wanted to make talking puppets with our small styrofoam take out containers the other day- but it looks like hubby already tossed him. He sees it as clutter; I see it as fun! I think we are both right!

  2. Great ideas. We usually pick up paint chips for the girls to keep them busy while we shop. I love the memory game idea.

  3. Wonderful ideas! We love to use items for "non-traditional" uses. I have never heard of using the pipe like that. D would love that!

  4. Oh, I am going to keep that clothespin color matching idea for later--when we master the clothespin! :) But I think we could do the mickey color cards and try a mini round of memory--great ideas! I love it.
