Nuts and Bolts

nuts and bolts nuts and bolts activity

An inexpensive activity that promotes the development of motor skills is to play and experiment with nuts and bolts. Get 3-5 bolts of various sizes, the corresponding washers, and the corresponding nuts. Let your child figure out which ones fit together and practice screwing on the nuts.

I started with 3 of them for B. I wish I would have started with just 1 until he got the hang of it. He had a hard time getting the nut started at the top so he got frustrated. After he got the hang of it, it was really fun for him. They do sell plastic nut and bolt kits for the same purpose, but this was cheaper and the real thing so he could be "just like dad".

  1. Here is a link that has some great information about Dual-language programs:

If one is available to you, I would definately look into it. Like all schools (I know that you know this as a teacher) the quality will vary depending on the teacher and the program. It is SO much easier to learn a second language when you are a child. Strangely enough, that is not a choice for us where we currently live. I am thinking about bilingually homeschooling D if we do not move before he starts Kindergarten.

  4. I've a post about nuts and bolts scheduled later in the week! LOL! I could only scrounge up one nut and bolt from the toolbox however. My husband needs to tidy it up a bit I think!

I like the size matching aspect of it and that is what I wanted to do with Bear, but it will have to wait til the next trip to the hardware store.

  5. I like this hands on activity. It allows little ones to problem solve and use trial and error to see what works.
