Writing in Rice

I decided I wanted B to practice drawing and writing in sand but my impulsive self wanted to do it right then and we didn’t have any sand. So first I got out some granulated sugar that I accidently bought once (pictured above). It was going great until my husband walked in and reminded me that sugar attracts ants. OK threw that away and went for salt. Still a little messy. Finally I had some very thin rice and that worked great. B had a fun time, it was easy to see on the floor for pickup purposes, and although I wish it was a bigger area for him to draw and write in, I enjoyed the fact that I could just snap the lid on and store it until next time.

  1. I have a huge bag of rice that I want to dye, but I think we will use it for this first because who knows when I will get around to dyeing it. Thanks!

  2. If you have a cookie sheet with a rim, you can put it in that. We tried to write in rice, but found we could see our letters better in the salt.
