I saw this idea in Highlights (High Five) Magazine, the December 2010 issue. They provided house and store front doors, windows, and signs to make a paper bag neighborhood. B glued the pieces to the front of paper bags and then we stuffed them with newspaper and stapled them closed. It was a fun craft which led to hours of pretend play.
You can make this easily at home without the Highlights Magazine pieces. You could draw, paint, or cut out shapes to create your own paper bag neighborhood. Use things like cars, characters, and animals from your toy box to add to the neighborhood and let the pretend play begin!
You could put cookies or snack cracers in them and give them away to the neighbors. or someone you didn't know.. That would be a way of teaching them how to give to one another..

ReplyDeleteThis is so perfect. I'm preparing today for a first birthday party tomorrow. I'll have all my nephews here so I'm making a road map for them to drive their cars on (like your posterboard one) but I'm using a shower curtain that I painted. I have that High Five magazine!! But I had totally forgotten about that. Now we'll have buildings to put out. I can't wait for the kids to go to sleep so I can get it ready. Thanks for sharing your finished product.

ReplyDeleteAs soon as my daughter saw that issue of Highlights, she immediately wanted to make the town. She had fun playing with it once it was all assembled, but the big hit was certainly in the construction...all about the process rather than the finished product, I guess!
