Paper Plate Snake

Do you remember making the paper plate snake when you were little? For whatever reason it is such a magical thing to turn a paper plate into a coily snake or mobile.

Draw the spiral line on the plate for your child to cut along (great way to sneak in cutting practice).

Decorate before or after cutting. Use crayons, markers, paint or punch holes and hang things along the snake. Fun!

Do you have any other ideas on ways to use the paper plate snake? I'd love to hear them!

  1. If you have an old record player, poke a hole in the middle of the plate then put the plate on the player. Turn it on and let the kids use markers to swirl color on the plate as it spins. Then cut in a spiral. I did this in the fall when I worked with preschoolers. We'd attach a construction paper leaf on the end and hang on a string from the ceiling of the classroom. Really cool effect with lots of "leaves" falling!
